Things to consider

February 28, 2011 Leave a comment
  1. Anne Hathaway and James Franco were not the best Oscar hosts. In fact, they were probably two of the worst. My pick for next year: bring back Billy Crystal. He knew how to work the room, know what I’m sayin’?
  2. Bad planning on someone’s part doesn’t always constitute an emergency on mine (work related). I’m venting, sorry ๐Ÿ™‚
  3. If I take a nap Sunday afternoon, I will NOT get any sleep Sunday night. But, on a positive note, did you know the old Law & Order episodes come on at 4am? That’s pretty cool.
  4. Every kid we encountered on our trip to the park thought that my dog Bear was a puppy. I guess it’s because he’s small, maybe? But neh, not a puppy. He’s six years old now. Check him out:

Bear on a mission to see what the cats are doing.

And last, but probably not least: Did you know you can burn out a hand mixer’s motor by trying to cream too many bricks of cream cheese with sugar? I found that out this weekend. I think it’s time to invest in a nice standalone model.

And, dear readers, one of my old faves, from a fave flick. I can watch The Jazz Singer pretty much any day of the week and not get bored:

Music sets the mood sometimes.

Depending on the mood, music sets the tone. My mood varies throughout the day, as anyone else’s does. So, when that happens, here are some examples of what I listen to:

*Nudge*Nudge*Wink*Wink*Say No More*:

It sets the tone for the minute/hour/day/week/month. That’s the way it’s been with me and music since I was a kid. I associate certain songs with certain times in my life, as I’m sure you do also, my dear reader. Feel free to shout out your faves and why ๐Ÿ™‚

Comedy from both sides of the pond

It’s interesting seeing the evolution of the TV comedy from the 70s until now. Here are some of my favorites from each era:

The 80s:

The 90s (clips from Absolutely Fabulous):

The 2000s:

Seems like the Brits are able to get away with much more than American TV, yeah?

SOTD – It’s an oldie but goodie

February 16, 2011 Leave a comment

I’m a child of the 80s through and through. Knowing that Casey Kasem was going to debut Duran Duran’s The Reflex on America’s Top 10 was the highlight of a Saturday night. Well, that and watching Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live right after. Those were definitive years for a grade schooler.

Madonna’s Material Girl? Oh man, my friend Teri and I had to go out and get those rubber bracelets and lace gloves ready for that. It was exciting.

And so, in that vein, I purchased this song for my daily commute. It drove Erik kinda batty this morning with me dancing and singing along loudly in the car, but well worth it:

As I explained to him, this song came out during a summer where I spent all my time at the city swimming pool doing lessons, and later on going to summer recreation at the high school. That was fun because I could run and jump and not get into trouble.

“Hey! Stop jumping off the roof! Stop running around in the street, you’re going to get run over! Stop jumping all over your sister!”

What’s a kid to do??? ๐Ÿ™‚

Why cats? Why not cats, that’s the real question

February 15, 2011 Leave a comment

It’s a well known fact that anyone who spends a certain amount ofย  time conversing with me learns quickly of my love for cats. That’s not to say that I’m a dog hater… far from it, in fact. After all, there is a Pekingese pooch by the name of Bear who lives rent-free in our house. I’m a dog lover also, damnit!

But, the knowledge is there that I identify first with cats rather than dogs. Why is this?

Top 5 reasons why I’m a cat person first and foremost (in no particular order):

1. Cats are lazy as hell.

I’m lazy too. If you catch me on a Saturday really happy, it’s because I’m sprawled on the couch watching trash TV or snoozing. I have been known to not get off the couch during True Life marathons on MTV for hours if possible. Well, except for bathroom and water breaks. Otherwise, the couch is my lair. And so it is for my cats. If you try to move Powa, she will complain quite loudly. Same for me.

I'm one with this notion.

2. Cats want to be all up in your business.

My husband is like this. If I am looking at funny memes, he’s got to see what they are. If I’m in the bedroom reading a book, he’s got to come and see what it is and why I find it necessary to venture from the couch into solitude. The cats do this first, though. First one, then the other walks in and then fight over who gets to lie on the bed next to me. It is very often that I fall asleep and find two large felines sound asleep next to me, paws on my arm. Erik gets annoyed because he feels they choose him over me. Poor baby ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

3. Cats are not quiet about being hungry.

I get really crabby when I haven’t eaten. There have been times where Erik will say to me “Let’s go get some food so you can start making sense again”. The cats do the same. Powa will go seek a human out and complain loudly until her need is satisfied. Even then she’ll only eat a few nuggets and then go off. So much effort into making the alert for that? Dang.

4. Cats get annoyed with noisy children.

That’s pretty much self explanatory. Who doesn’t lose it when one is obligated to attend a child’s birthday party at a pizza place? I’ve seen parents get into combat mode at these places. “You said my kid looks like the Michelin Man? It’s on now… Nathanial, hold my earrings and shoes. It’s about to get real in here!”

Sorry, I went off there for a minute. Yes, noisy kids aren’t my cup of tea either.

5. Cats like to snuggle with their humans.

I like to snuggle with mine too. Who doesn’t, right?

A short note about Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2011 Leave a comment

As it is Valentine’s Day, I get to reflect on life with my amazing husband. This day is special to both of us for other reasons as well, but it’s just nice to remember that the sweetie and I can have a nice meal (that I don’t have to cook :)) and just have a good time.

I’m not one of those gals who feels the need to go all out. Hell, if he takes me to my favorite Tex-Mex eatery for some amazing Chicken Envueltos, I’m happier still.

So for him, and all of you kind visitors to my blog, Happy Valentine’s Day ๐Ÿ™‚
