Movie recommendation: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (possible spoilers so be warned)

I read an interview some time back where James Franco talked about “phoning in” his performance in this movie. The truth is, he’s right. He and Frieda Pinto pretty much provide window dressing. In truth, the movie belongs to the apes, and that’s not such a bad thing. There are some tender pivotal moments between Franco and John Lithgow (plays his father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease), but that’s the extent of it.

Andy Serkis (Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy) plays Caesar, a chimp Franco raises from birth. Born from a scientific experiment that provides him with a preternatural ability to learn at an amazing speed, Caesar proves to be a leader among apes despite the humans’ desire to enslave his brethren. He lives up to his name, and that’s all I’m going to say. Serkis again proves himself as he did in the LOTR trilogy, showing that using motion capture can still convey the emotion a character needs even with the addition of technology. Weta Digital took what they did for Avatar and stepped it up many notches to provide the humanistic details in the apes’ performances. Every nuance, every expression is captured in fine detail.

It’s interesting how a movie can inspire an almost bloodlust for humans to pay the price for what they did. We are no longer in the days of Chuck Heston winning over the apes. It’s a completely different ballgame this time around.

I will recommend that if you go watch it, stay for the credits.

Two thumbs up. I didn’t think I was going to be able to say that about any movie released this summer (it’s all been crap), but at the tail end, there is a winner.
