DVD Recommendation: Warrior (spoilers possible)

December 26, 2011 Leave a comment

Starring: Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte

A synopsis:

Haunted by a tragic past, ex-Marine Tommy Conlon (Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his father (Nick Nolte) to train for SPARTA, the biggest winner-takes-all event in mixed martial arts history. A former wrestling prodigy, Tommy blazes a path toward the championship while his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), an ex-fighter-turned teacher, returns to the ring in a desperate bid to save his family from financial ruin. But when Brendan’s unlikely, underdog rise sets him on a collision course with the unstoppable Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront each other and the forces that pulled them apart, facing off in the most soaring, soul stirring, and unforgettable climax that must be seen to be believed.

Yes, it is set against the backdrop of the MMA world. But, this flick presents an interesting relationship story between a father and his children. They have a hard time forgiving him for the sins of his past, yet cannot fully cut him out of their lives. Also, the relationship between the brothers defines the film to a great degree, especially in the conclusion/resolution. I liked this movie a lot. Absolutely recommended 🙂

Movie recommendation: Pearl Jam Twenty

Directed by: Cameron Crowe

Starring: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and other notable Seattle bands

If you had any interest in the late 80s/early 90s Seattle grunge scene, check it out. From the origins of Mother Love Bone to how the surviving members of the band soldiered on after the death of Andrew Wood with Eddie Vedder, it’s ripe with old and new interviews and lots of archival footage.

Break out the flannel shirts, torn jeans, and Doc Martens, kids.

Guilty Pleasures in TV land

December 19, 2011 Leave a comment

I’m the type of person that tends to think that most reality TV can induce brain suckage. The first examples that come to mind are Jersey Shore with the orange-hued fake-boobed “guidettes” and pretty much anything on the E! network.

However, I will completely admit that I’ve been a True Life viewer for a few years now. I don’t know why I find that series fascinating, other than I’m a nosy person who wants to see what other folks are up to in their real lives. Some of it is hard to watch, but it seems to be a bit more honest than other “reality” programs (The Hills, anything with the Kardashians or any TLC show).

Lately my new guilty pleasure has been The Real Housewives of Atlanta. One Sunday evening I turned the channel to Bravo, and got sucked in. It’s almost like watching a soap opera in that if you miss a couple of episodes you’re not going to know what happened to Blair or Teddy or which surgeon removed half of Chord’s brain (I’m just making things up at this point). So now, without even really thinking about it, at 8pm it’s time to see what Nene, Phaedra, Kandi (my favorite), Cynthia, Sheree, and Kim are up to.  Oooh, the cattiness, the drama, the funny one-liners. I’m sure not all of it is unscripted, but it’s holding my interest.

Restaurant Recommendation: La Jaiba Seafood Bar and Grill (McAllen, TX)

December 16, 2011 Leave a comment

To celebrate the A I got in my Java programming class (hooray 🙂 ), my darling husband took me to La Jaiba Seafood Bar and Grill in McAllen for lunch. If you’ve never been and love seafood, I highly recommend it. It’s definitely my go-to seafood joint when I have a hankering for something other than beef and chicken. I’m not the type of person that really eats anything other than fish and shrimp either, which means I’ve never had oysters, scallops, you name it. But, I don’t really feel like I’m missing out when I can have their delicious tacos.

I’m not very adventurous when it comes to seafood, I suppose, although I did have shark one time when my Dad went to a fishing tournament and brought it back. Wasn’t that great 😐

Their fish tacos are so tasty, with a seasoned cornmeal batter and fried to perfection. There is also a sauce used that has a wee bit of a kick, but I haven’t identified the ingredients yet. Or you can get grilled too if you want to be a bit healthier, those are great also. This was my splurge meal for the week, so I went to town on the fried version with a quickness. Good thing I got my workout done this morning before work, eh?

The staff is very friendly, and you will often see the couple who owns the place serving the customers and checking on them to see if they need anything. That’s a nice touch that I don’t often see when dining out.

La Jaiba’s (pronounced Hai-ba) motto is “Jaiba Nice Day”. Some may think it’s cheesy, but I dig it. Jaiba nice day, y’all 🙂
