Book review: A Storm of Swords

April 29, 2012 Leave a comment

A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3)A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first 400 or so pages are a bit of a pain to get through, but it’s worth it because a lot of action occurs for the majority of the primary characters.

Favorite passages (from one of the Tyrion chapters):

Prince Oberyn: “The only one who was remotely presentable was young Baelor Hightower. A pretty lad, and my sister was half in love with him until he had the misfortune to fart once in our presence. I promptly named him Baelor Breakwind, and after that Elia couldn’t look at him without laughing. I was a monstrous young fellow, someone should have sliced out my vile tongue”

Yes, Tyrion agreed silently. Baelor Hightower was no longer young, but he remained Lord Leyton’s heir; wealthy, handsome, and a knight of splendid repute. Baelor Brightsmile, they called him now. Had Elia wed him in place of Rhaegar Targaryen, she might be in Oldtown with her children growing tall around her. He wondered how many lives had been snuffed out by that fart.

Serious novels, with some levity thrown in here and there.

Chicken pasta primavera (a basic recipe)

April 24, 2012 Leave a comment

Over the weekend I was experimenting with different recipes. Now, different people like different types of seasoning for the pasta. I’d imagine folks can use anything from full on Alfredo sauce to Ranch, Italian, or perhaps a balsamic dressing. It’s entirely up to your tastes.

  • Boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut up into small pieces
  • olive or canola oil
  • some sort of pasta (your choice) – I used penne (about 2 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut up into thin slices
  • 1 zucchini , cut up into thin slices
  • 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped
  • Seasoning/dressing

  1. Heat up 2 tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan. Throw in chicken and and cook until the juices are no longer pink. Toss in vegetables and cook for another four minutes or so until the spinach wilts and the other veggies are tender.
  2. As the chicken is cooking, boil up the pasta according to package directions.
  3. Once both parties are done, toss together in a big bowl and add your seasoning/dressing.

Voilรก! A fast, easy, tasty meal with good vegetables and protein ๐Ÿ™‚

Book review: A Clash of Kings

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2)A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Excellent book. The action keeps moving along, though it’s quite long.

It’s hard with these books to say anything without giving away spoilers, but I will say it’s worth a read. Favorite character in this particular book: Arya Stark. She knows how to survive. Least favorite: Theon Greyjoy. You’ll know why when you read it (methinks I’ve said too much).

My hatred for Joffrey has shifted slightly to the Greyjoys. I find nothing redeeming about that clan so far.

Enough with the hail already!

Location: my backyard

Time: about an hour ago

Annoying: absolutely

A few weeks ago we had a pretty bad hailstorm that came out of nowhere. Lots of damage to homes and businesses. Folks hadn’t even finished patching up their roofs when this came down today:

Sick of this hail ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Update: I took some video from the patio:

Book recommendation: A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Excellent, excellent book. I actually waited until after watching the first season of Game of Thrones to read this book, but that fact certainly didn’t take away from my enjoyment of reading it. It’s very hard to put down, even if it clocks in at over 700 pages. Plus, there is way more detail in the book than the show could cover that was great to read and know.

I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that I still want to smack the heck out of Joffrey.

Abs, abs, abs

You want an interesting ab workout? Here you go:

Admittedly, we did not go so far as to use the medicine ball/punches at the end, but just standing up is crazy hard. It is geared more towards an MMA style of workout routine with the addition of the punches, but anyone can benefit from it, not just MMA fighters.

Then there is Turbo Fire Abs 10. No matter how often I do it, it burns baby, burns!

Try this exercise (~4:36 mark):

Try doing 5, then 10. Heck, you can include the above into a Tabata routine if you wanted.
