Book review: A Dance with Dragons (possible spoilers)

A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5)A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Excellent book. I need to know what happens to certain folks though, and that won’t be answered until the next one is finished. Argh!

A few questions:

  • Who did Brienne have with her?
  • What happened to Jon?
  • Do Rhaegal and Viserion rejoin Dany or is Drogon her last dragon baby to survive?

Some of the chapters are harder to get through. In usual Martin fashion, there are very vivid descriptions of murders of all types, bowel movements, crazy food (would you eat eel pie?), and of course, forced sex. That’s not to say that those subjects make up the entire series, but it does get old after a while.

This particular title clocks in at almost 900 pages. Well worth it, though.

A Dance with Dragons blows A Feast with Crows away for the simple reason that Martin has brought back Daenaerys, Tyrion and Jon Snow for the first time in 11 years (since A Storm of Swords). Without them the series just drags.

I agree, and not just because I have an affinity for all things dragon. Dany, Tyrion, and Jon really do provide a lot of interesting material. However, I do also enjoy Arya’s chapters as much, if not perhaps a bit more. She’s scrappy, she knows how to fend for herself, and she has the craziest adventures.

It will be very cool to see how Dany really interacts with her grown up dragons.

I thought A Feast for Crows was a bore. I was happy that DWD got back to my favorite characters, Tyrion and Arya, especially, but I really hated all the cliffhangers. I was especially disappointed that Tyrion didn’t get to meet Dany yet.

Oooh, it should be interesting when they finally meet. Also, if and when Dany meets Aegon.

I hope it doesn’t take years to get the next title out. I need some closure!
