On the merits of strength training (a little achievement this week)

More of a proof of concept I guess. A few months back in Krav Maga class our instructor had us get with our training partners (we do a lot of sparring with pads and without). One person would get down into push up position and the other would pick up the other person’s feet. Then you would try to do your push ups. I failed miserably at it, could not get my strength up to do even one push up AND keep from breaking form and crumbling to the ground.

Then, I started doing strength training using Les Mills Pump at home. I’m not really following the set schedule (no real time for that), but at least three times a week I try to do Pump Revolution or Pump Extreme, and increasing the amount of weight on the bar.

Wednesday we had to do the push ups again in the same manner for Krav stripe testing. For the first time ever, I was able to do 10 push ups while my partner held my feet before asking him to drop me. Upper body and core strength…  it IS Increasing!

It’s a small victory, but one I’m pretty proud of. My body is changing shape little by little. I do have a ways to go, but I hope to be in fighting shape when it comes time for black belt testing. That’s my goal, for sure.

Martial arts is great in so many ways, but strength training has been a tremendous boost in reshaping and strengthening my body. I can’t recommend it enough, especially for women.
