Android vs. iPhone: the debate rages on

October 26, 2012 Leave a comment

I have an older generation iPhone. My husband just got an Android. I can’t even tell you which one it is because that’s how much I pay attention. He’s a gadget freak, so when I saw this video, I immediately felt like someone had been spying on our conversations regarding phones or something:

Some New Additions to Dragonvale (pics included)

Now that it’s close to Halloween, Dragonvale brought back an old favorite: the Bone Dragon. It’s only available until November 5th, so time is ticking if you want one. Lava + Mountain was the combo I used:

Lava + Mountain = Bone

To continue along the Halloween motif, there is also a Ghost Dragon, also only available until November 5th. Mine lives with my Paperย  Dragon, another cool addition to Dragonvale. Reminds me a bit of Sakura and Panlong. For ghost, Mud and Cold worked. Unfortunately, Paper Dragon is now expired, and I’m not sure when it’s coming back ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Paper Dragon and Ghost Dragon

An older dragon that’s eluded me for a while has been Sun. I was actually trying for another dragon, and lucked out with Storm + Lightning. A lot of folks say that the time you breed affects which dragon you get, as in 7am – 7pm would be Sun, and 7pm – 7am for Moon, but I’m not completely sure. It’s nice though, finally seeing him with Lady Moon:

Storm + Lightning = Sun. Here he is hanging with Moon and some other friends

Finally, we have the Ash Dragon. He looks a little derpy, but fun. I’ve won some races at the track with him, so he’s a good addition overall:

Plant + Lightning = Ash

Just for fun, I decided to include a pic of my Gem Island. Pearl, Peridot, Opal, Sapphire, and Ruby are residents on the island. However, because each one is only available for its corresponding month, I don’t want to include combos aside from Opal (Lava + Mud) available for October. You have a week and change to try for it, and then the November gem dragon will take over (Topaz):

Opal for October = Mud + Lava

Best of luck getting your Dragon friends ๐Ÿ™‚

Louis C.K. Live in Houston (10/19/12) – a short review

I love Louis C.K.’s standup, and am a big fan of his television show. Hell, I thought Lucky Louie on HBO was great too, and it was a real shame it was cancelled after one season. So, when I found out he was out touring, I had to get tickets.

Recently, Louis started a trend in where comedians began releasing their new material online for a very low fee, oftentimes also free of DRM (Digital Rights Management).ย  He took it a step further and said that on this tour, all tickets were going to be going for the same rate (about 45 bucks each), and it’s first come, first purchase. To me, that’s such an unusual and great thing to do, considering the skyrocketing fees of concert tickets. And, as a result, his tour has been sold out for months.

So, after a pretty tough couple of midterm exams, I was ready to get away for a couple of days, and this show was the perfect excuse. Why is that?

If you are at a comedy show and you’re laughing so hard and so long you feel like almost passing out, then it’s been a great show. I now know that feeling. From beginning to end, Louis had the audience in the palm of his hand. There’s something about his delivery, but he really draws you into each and every anecdote. You’re there as he’s trying to get an elderly lady up on her feet at the airport, you’re there in his room when he thinks a ghost is poking him in the chest, you’re there as he’s eating a pastry and accepting that that’s how things are just supposed to be.

All of the material on this tour is brand new, and it works so very well. I think the show was about two hours long, he came out and did a short encore, and then his second show was going to start shortly after that. Crazy.

There are very few folks I would drive 6 hours to see, and he’s in that short list for very good reason.

So, if you managed to get tickets, you’re going to have a great time. If you didn’t, well that’s a complete bummer, man ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Prometheus – a movie review (spoilers ahead)

October 15, 2012 Leave a comment

From the Wikipedia entry:

Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, and written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. The story is set in the late 21st century and centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they follow a star map discovered among the remnants of several ancient Earth cultures. The crew, seeking the origins of humanity, arrive on a distant world and discover an advanced civilization and a threat that could cause the extinction of the human race.

In typical Ridley Scott fashion, there is a strong female lead who must overcome some very terrifying odds to survive. Scott has said before that the film isn’t a direct prequel to Aliens, but there is a pivotal scene at the end that “really ties the room together” so to speak. No Newt this time around, but lots of creepy crawlies and sci fi horror elements.

I did have some problems with the story itself as far as continuity was concerned. It seemed to get weak with some characters, and some folks didn’t even say anything. Who were the crew members, what role did they have to play? Nothing at all, just screen filler I guess. Michael Fassbender did make an excellent android. He almost reminded me of Jude Law in AI (another great sci fi film).

All in all, I enjoyed the movie. If you liked Aliens, you’ll like this one.
