Movie Recommendation: Lars and the Real Girl/Drive (possibly)

This is definitely a quirky movie. If you don’t like quirky movies, then you may not want to watch it. I enjoyed it immensely.

Ryan Gosling could have played this for straight out laughs, but he didn’t. There is humor, but his performance is so subtle, it doesn’t feel like he’s making a joke out of it. Serious business kids.

Of course, don’t be like me and start watching Drive right after the movie, because all the feel-goodness goes away really quick:

Or do watch it. Drive is a great movie regardless.

Movie Recommendation: Sound City

For those who don’t know, Sound City is a recording studio based in Los Angeles where most of the influential rock recordings of the past 40 years were laid down. Think Fleetwood Mac, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Nirvana, Weezer, and the list goes on and on.

In recent times, Sound City with its Neve soundboard has almost been swallowed up with the advent of digital music production (the dreaded auto-tune is part of that). Dave Grohl put this movie together to celebrate its long, storied history, and what set it apart from other studios that have come and gone; that same Neve soundboard, custom built and used by hundreds of artists, producers, and engineers.

If you’re into learning about rock history (and I am in a big way), check it out. There’s a plethora of famous faces that stop by to tell their tales about Sound City. There is even a Nirvana reunion of sorts, with a special guest filling it for Kurt.

Great flick overall.

T’is the season for races

One of the pros to living in South Texas is the mild winter temperatures. I don’t do well when the thermostat gets below 60 degrees or so, particularly when it comes to running. For example, I did a 5K at the end of December with the thermostat reading about 46 degrees. Couple that with the insanity of deciding to wear a compression top under a hoodie (I was burning up something fierce half a mile in) AND my iPhone dying on me, well it was just a perfect storm of everything going wrong. Finished the race without stopping, but my time was pretty crap.

This weekend was another race I signed up for at the last minute. Not only was it much warmer, but the course was laid out nicely. Improved my time by about 1:30 🙂

I don’t get much chance to really train for races during the week, so I have to save my longer distances for the weekend. But, I’m really going to try to get that time down to where I used to be when I first started getting into races a few years back. Sub-30s, baby. In the meantime, I’m searching for a treadmill for early morning runs and getting the conditioning where I need it to be.

That being said, there are some songs I must have in my race playlist. The majority of these songs have been part of my races since 2009, and even if I’ve heard them a thousand times, there they will stay:

Strap on those sneakers and hit the pavement. The time is right 😉

Extended Budweiser Super Bowl commercial

February 5, 2013 Leave a comment

So I didn’t get to watch the Super Bowl this past Sunday because I got called into work. Kind of a bummer. However, every year I try to at least catch the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial to see just how much it’s going to affect me.

The tears! Oh god, the tears!

Here’s the extended version of the commercial. Enjoy.

Blue Valentine – Official Trailer

This is a devastating movie in every sense of the word. Not because it’s violent (although there is one scene that is), but it takes the viewer through the deterioration of a relationship, cut through with scenes of the beginning when there was still hope.

I don’t know how he does it, but Ryan Gosling can make anything sexy, from playing the ukelele to male pattern baldness. Michelle Williams matches him step for step in this beautiful film.
