DVD Review: Rush (2013)

Let me preface this post by saying yes, I have a weakness for Chris Hemsworth. This is an established fact. But contrary to what those around me think, he is NOT the only reason I wanted to watch this movie.

Based on the real life rivalry between two Formula 1 drivers (Niki Lauda and James Hunt), this film by Ron Howard takes a journey from the early days when Lauda (played by Daniel Brühl) and Hunt (Hemsworth) meet up during their early days in Formula 3 racing to their fateful F-1 season of 1976.

Hunt is the man’s man, every guy wants to hang with him, and every woman wants to sleep with him. Lauda is the outsider, finding little reason to be likable and focused like a laser on getting the job done. In the end though, the more they hate each other the more they realize there is a respect that can’t be denied.

Hemsworth turns in a pretty decent performance as Hunt, but Brühl really steals the show as Lauda. I’m not sure why he wasn’t nominated for any awards this year (ninja edit: he was nominated for several, but not for the Academy Award), but his performance was breathtaking.

This movie cements what I’d already thought… F-1 drivers are at least somewhat mental by nature. Am I right?

Video: Guardians of the Galaxy first official trailer

I’m so used to seeing Chris Pratt as lovable Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation that I keep thinking Andy’s gone to save the galaxy as a buff smartass named The StarLord. But, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it?

Here’s the trailer, and following is a best of Andy Dwyer just for kicks:

And since the new season of Check it out! with Dr. Steve Brule is premiering on Cartoon Network on February 27th (set your DVRs, kids), I thought I’d throw in a little John C. Reilly in what should absolutely be an Academy Award winning portrayal of a man who goes against the odds to make a hilariously awkward public access cable show.

Check it out!

In all fairness, my dog isn’t really good at it either. Neither are the cats.

I finally understand why Under Armour Heat Gear works so well (and a short note on Valentine’s Day)

Whenever I’m at the dojo, it’s always a time where I’m guaranteed to sweat a ton (always a great thing). Unfortunately, I hadn’t found the right compression workout wear to wear underneath my uniform to keep me cool and moving, much less somewhat sweat-free. I’ve tried numerous brands from Adidas and Nike to Starter and Rawlings. Some got me overheated, others really didn’t do much to wick away sweat.

Over the weekend, I decided to check into Under Armour, a brand I’d been avoiding for a while. It seemed that every time I’d go casually check out their stuff, it was always so pricy and I wasn’t convinced that the Heat Gear really worked all that well. Sports Authority (my new home away from home) had some compression Heat Gear tops for about 24 bucks when I’d seen them online for 40, so I bought a compression top and shorts. Plus, I had a coupon 🙂

Holy. Cow. This stuff really works.

I didn’t feel overheated like I did with other compression tops during or after the workout, and my muscles definitely weren’t as sore either. So yeah, if you live in a warm climate like I do and work out a lot, consider Under Armour Heat Gear. It’s so worth it.

As per Valentine’s Day, I hope you and yours had a great one. My wonderful husband surprised me with a fragrance I’d been eyeing for months, and he was damn sneaky about it too. There I was buying some essentials at Ulta (another one of my favorite haunts), and somehow he got to the counter with it without setting off my radar. I must’ve been lost in thought in the nail polish section.

He’s such a bum, but in all the best ways.

TV: True Detective loves some Lone Star Beer. It’s also a great show

All right, all right, all right

All right, all right, all right

Aside from the obvious product placement love of the one true Texas beer, True Detective is an interesting show to watch. That is, if you’re into film noire and shows that have a vibe similar to Se7en. It’s very dark even in the comedic moments.

Matthew McConaughey(still in his Dallas Buyers Club gaunt mode) plays Rust Cohle, a career investigator with a very dark past and a mind like a steel trap. His sole purpose in life is to get into the nuts and bolts of the serial killer’s mind. Woody Harrelson plays Marty Hart, a man’s man who has a wife and young children, but gives his all to the job at their expense.

The scenes are initially set in the present day, where the two detectives are retired from the job and flash back to 1995, when they were working together on a bizarre ritualistic murder. One seems to be doing well in the present day, the other, not so much. As to why two good friends end up barely seeing each other once in a decade is left for later episodes, but it is a vital part of the story.

McConaughey and Harrelson have obvious chemistry onscreen as they are good buddies offscreen as well. They play off each other in darkly humorous ways, but it does get real serious real quick between them also.

The other great character in this series is the state of Louisiana. This is not the Louisiana of True Blood mind you, even if the two shows are on the same network. This one is shady back roads, shacks and burned up churches all along the bayou. No beautiful vampires here, but the scenery is still striking.

Again, this is a very dark drama, not for the squeamish. It’s still rewarding to watch, all the same.

Until then, enjoy:
