DVD Review: Rush (2013)

Let me preface this post by saying yes, I have a weakness for Chris Hemsworth. This is an established fact. But contrary to what those around me think, he is NOT the only reason I wanted to watch this movie.

Based on the real life rivalry between two Formula 1 drivers (Niki Lauda and James Hunt), this film by Ron Howard takes a journey from the early days when Lauda (played by Daniel Brühl) and Hunt (Hemsworth) meet up during their early days in Formula 3 racing to their fateful F-1 season of 1976.

Hunt is the man’s man, every guy wants to hang with him, and every woman wants to sleep with him. Lauda is the outsider, finding little reason to be likable and focused like a laser on getting the job done. In the end though, the more they hate each other the more they realize there is a respect that can’t be denied.

Hemsworth turns in a pretty decent performance as Hunt, but Brühl really steals the show as Lauda. I’m not sure why he wasn’t nominated for any awards this year (ninja edit: he was nominated for several, but not for the Academy Award), but his performance was breathtaking.

This movie cements what I’d already thought… F-1 drivers are at least somewhat mental by nature. Am I right?
