On the merits of bodyweight fitness

  1.  Everything is sore. Everything. Why? Because if you do it right, all your major muscle groups will be targeted.
  2. Don’t need equipment like tractor tires (????) and weight benches, but fitness bands and hand weights do come in handy. All you need is a soft surface, really.
  3. Over time, you will get stronger but consistency is key.
  4. If you are a martial arts student (like me), your practice will improve in very positive ways. Even if you’re not into martial arts, you’re going to love the gainz, brah.

Right now Cross-Fit is all the rage, but I can see the next phase leading to bodyweight fitness. It’s not as injury-prone and definitely not as cost-prohibitive. BWF also incorporates moves that really work the body and the Core in particular, like planks, squats, and lunges. Memories of Pilates and Yoga classes often come to me when I’m in class, and that’s a great thing.

Get yourself a mat, and start working those burpees, planks, and lunges!
