Tamales… a family tradition shown in pictures

December 23, 2014 Leave a comment

Normally I miss the annual Tamalada at my mom’s house if it happens the day before Thanksgiving because I have to work. This year, she moved it to today. Since I’m on winter break from work, I was able to actually attend and lend a hand. All told, it took about 5 hours of labor, gossip, laughter, and a few burned digits. Successful outing, I’d say.

Here are some photos from the event. Note: some were consumed and definitely enjoyed.

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and is my day to bake cookies. Let’s just say that after this week I’m done with cooking for a while 🙂

The final product. One the left is a bean and cream cheese tamale, and on the right is a chicken/turkey tamale.

Sometimes there's not enough time to make beans from scratch. I buy them from El Pato ready made if needed.

Masa normally doesn't come pre-seasoned. Gotta put in a little elbow grease to get it ready. Grandma is even there supervising :)

My mom is old school, she still uses a molcajete to grind up seasonings. One day I will own this thing. After decades of seasoning it's gone through, it's priceless to me :)

Don't forget the corn husks. They have to be softened in water and all stray strands removed.

Kinda blurry, but this one is ready to be rolled.

Extreme close up! There really isn't a lot of cream cheese in the tamale, but the angle makes it look as such.

Ready to rock and roll on the stove for an hour or so.

If you haven’t been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you should be. It’s been excellent all season long. This episode was righteous.!
Spoilers all through the article, I’m giving fair warning.

Edit: I couldn’t help it. Here’s a gif from last night:

I’m Quake-ing in my boots 😀

Some instant streaming recommendations from Netflix and Amazon Prime

Winter break is almost upon us. With the weather turning colder (and rainy for some reason), it may be time to sit down on the couch with a refreshing beverage in one hand and the remote control in the other for some quality show viewing. Here are some recommendations I have if you are an Amazon Prime or Netflix subscriber. Enjoy and happy viewing!

A Cat in Paris: A cat in Paris leads a double life and helps his owner avenge the death of her father. It’s whimsical, dark, funny, and cute all at the same time. Available on Amazon Prime.

The Black Kung Fu Experience: The Black Kung Fu Experience focuses on how a group of African American pioneers became respected masters in a subculture dominated by Chinese and white men. It’s a very interesting and informative documentary and I highly recommend it if you’re into martial arts like I am. Available on Amazon Prime.

Mel Brooks: Make a Noise: What can I say that hasn’t been said about the master. Watch this documentary if you love Mel Brooks like I love Mel Brooks. Interviews with his friends, colleagues, and the man himself about his life and his work. Available on Netflix Instant Streaming.
