Popcorn lovers unite!

September 20, 2017 Leave a comment

Good video on how to pop popcorn without an air popper old school, on the stove and everything:

My first thought was hey, I have a metal bowl, I have salt, I have oil, let’s do this!

My journey through a few makeup brands (comparison study)

September 19, 2017 2 comments

So lately I’ve noticed that my eyeshadows are starting to hit pan due to heavy use, mostly Urban Decay’s Naked 3 palette which is my all time favorite. Not wanting to drop a ton of money to replace it right now, I wanted to see what in drugstore and non-Sephoraland could be use to help the situation. And, since I was already running out of eyelid primer, I tried a new one out too just for the experience. Here are a couple of reviews:

Eyeshadows

Cover Girl Eye Enhancers Shadows

Review: Lots of fallout. Even with eyelid primer it just didn’t stay on throughout the day, and the pigment had a lot to be desired. Sort of a fail for me.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio

Review: I am so impressed with Wet n Wild’s shadows. Very heavily pigmented and little to no fallout. At 3 bucks each, it’s easy to get a few palettes for the Fall and be ready for anything. Available at Wal-mart and other discount retailers.

Juvia’s Place Nubian Palette

Review: If there was ever a palette perfect for Fall… the Nubian is it. Rich golds, bronzes, and reds that fit any skintone. They are heavily pigmented, and I didn’t notice much in the way of fallout throughout the day. 12 full sized shadows in one palette for 20 dollars, it’s a great buy. Available at https://juviasplace.com.

Eye Primer

Urban Decay Primer Potion

Why oh why did you change the packaging on me? I don’t like the wand at all. It works great but hardly any product comes out when I use it. That’s all I’m gonna say on this because it bums me out so much.

Hard Candy Eyeshadow Primer

For $5, it’s a pretty good bargain I’d say. Works great and my eye makeup stays put all day. Available at Wal-mart and other discount retailers.

Eyeliner

Almay Liquid Liner

No. Just no. It smeared badly and when it’s time to remove, gets all over everything. I did not care for it at all. Big time fail.

My mother introduced me to Mally Beauty eyeliners and I have to say, I much prefer them than Almay in this case. A little more spendy sure, but the colors are rich and they last all day and into the night. Available at Ulta.com, Sephora, QVC, etc.

The Defiant Ones: great for music trivia enthusiasts

July 12, 2017 Leave a comment

Love me some music trivia. One of my most favorite hobbies is watching music documentaries of all types. I like learning little tidbits of gossip about my favorite artists and the stories behind the songs.

The Defiant Ones is a new documentary on HBO, telling the stories behind Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, their record labels (Interscope, Death Row, Aftermath, etc.) and their eventual partnership with Apple (Beats by Dre). Not to get into too much detail, but here are some of my favorite tidbits so far (just finished episode 3 last night):

  • Jimmy Iovine dated Stevie Nicks during the recording of her first solo album.
  • No one would sign Dr. Dre as a solo artist because of the lawsuits he was dealing with in regards to N.W.A/ Jerry Heller after he made The Chronic. Iovine jumped at the chance to sign him, telling him to give him three weeks to sort out the lawsuits.
  • Primus signed onto Interscope because they were impressed that Iovine was able to get Gerardo signed (Mr. Rico Suave himself).
  • Interscope Records advanced a significant amount of money to Death Row specifically to bail Tupac Shakur out of jail because Time Warner wouldn’t give the money outright.
  • Iovine was really tight with Suge Knight in the beginning. Knight would go play football at Iovine’s house on the weekends. Eventually Knight got caught up too much in the street life and well, here we are.
  • Iovine wanted Trent Reznor to get out of his contract with TVT Records so badly that he promised to give him a record label (Nothing Records), the ability to sign artists (how the world got Marilyn Manson), and complete independence in the studio. The result: The Downward Spiral, still one of my most favorite albums of all time.

The rest you’ll have to see for yourself 🙂

Rhubarb Raspberry crostata: a combination of recipes

Rhubarb Raspberry Crostata

Apologies for the crappy photo. Normally I get my husband to snap the shots, but I was in a hurry. It looked much better IRL 🙂

I tend to record any Ina Garten shows that come up on the Food Network and occasionally Martha Stewart on PBS. It’s a habit. I love their recipes, but sometimes I like to change things up even as I try them out.

For this Crostata, I used a combination of two recipes: Ina’s Rhubarb Raspberry compote and Martha’s pate sucree recipe for the dough base. I have my reasons:

Storytime!

The day before Mother’s day I’d made a batch of pate sucree originally for a tart that I was going to bring to my mother. The day of, however, I was very upset about my cat being sick and didn’t get to make it home (cat is doing much better now after 3 weeks of nonstop antibiotics). So, I ended up freezing the dough. When it came time to make the crostata, I thought, let’s test drive the pate sucree for this.

Here it is about a month later sitting the freezer and the dough was still amazing. Martha knows her stuff. It’s not dense like a shortbread crust, and has a little more sweetness.

In contrast, what I liked about Ina’s compote was that it wasn’t overly sweet, and the rhubarb and raspberry flavors really stood out, helped along with the orange zest and juice. It would make a great base for a pie or crumble also.

So there you have it, a crostata made from two recipes. I invited my family over to taste test, and they loved it. My mother took some home for their morning coffee. Too funny.

3-Bean Turkey chili: a quick recipe

May 31, 2017 Leave a comment

I’ve been tweaking this recipe on and off for a while now. Sundays I make a pot of this chili so that I’m not so tempted to go eat offsite at lunchtime. It’s pretty hearty, with lots of fiber and quite delicious. You can jazz it up with additional ingredients like jalapenos or julienned carrots. Let the imagination run wild 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can yellow corn (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can red kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can pinto beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
  • 1-2 TBSP chili powder (based on taste preferences)
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (omit if you don’t like the spice)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

In a large pot (Dutch oven also works well), heat up the oil and toss in the onions to cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add ground turkey and brown. Best part about this: add in the rest of the ingredients including spices, turn heat to low, and let simmer for 30-40 minutes.

Easy peasy.

When I transport this dish (or any involving tomatoes) for lunch, my plastic container gets stained. Annoying, right? Did some research on meal prep, and it seems that a lot of folks like using containers from Snap Pak. I bought these on Amazon and they work very well:

Big Little Lies… so not Knots Landing (spoilers possible)

April 12, 2017 Leave a comment

I’d heard about this mini series starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and Laura Dern and saw a couple of previews. I figured, rich women in California with perfect lives, let’s just give our awe and wish we were them.

Wrong. Dead Wrong.

Adapted from the best selling novel by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies is the story of a group of women whose children are enrolled in the same first grade class in affluent Monterey, California. Despite the picture-esque landscape and the million dollar homes, each of them has crosses to bear, and some of those are very violent.

Sure, it ain’t Westeros with people getting their heads chopped off, but believe it or not, I had as much of a visceral reaction to this mini series with regards to depictions of domestic violence (be forewarned, it can be very triggering) as Game of Thrones. I won’t go into details much, but some of the episodes can be quite jarring. Funny, witty, dark, and dangerous… each episode has those qualities.

Do I recommend this series? Yes I do. The performances are top notch and the writing is amazing. Just be prepared to feel some kinda way at the end and realize you need to step outside and take a breather because of the intensity.

Let me just say: if Nicole Kidman doesn’t get at least an Emmy nod for her portrayal of Celeste, I would be in complete shock. She gave a tour de force performance in this series. Alexander Skarsgård also gave a very nuanced, charged performance as Perry, her husband. The man is so expressive, he doesn’t even have to say anything to be sweet, loving, dark, and menacing all at the same time with one glance, or one whisper. I’ve seen a lot of his movies and True Blood (he’ll always be Eric Northman to me), and he just impresses me every time.
