What We Do In The Shadows trailer, and some Flight of the Conchords news

September 4, 2014 Leave a comment

What We Do In The Shadows is the new “vampire mockumentary” from Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (director of some Conchords episodes plus the feature Boy). If the trailer is anything to go by, it’s earned its reputation as a legit horror comedy like Shaun of the Dead. Won’t be released in the States until Halloween, but I’m definitely going to go see it.

In other Conchords news, there has been talk of the boys pulling together 4 episodes for HBO. Jemaine said it was a go, then he said no, then who knows. If it shows up on HBO, you’ll hear about it.

Meanwhile, watch old episodes of Flight of the Conchords. You’ll be glad you did.

Flight of the Conchords – A Texan Odyssey (great documentary)

If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a look. It follows Bret and Jemaine as they go to SXSW in hopes of breaking into the US market. Couldn’t have been all bad, they scored their TV show from it after all 😉

Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival (Austin, TX): a review

In a word, it was great. The weather cooperated, although it was the usual muggy South Texas heat of late August. The festival was held at the Austin 360 Amphitheater inside the grounds of the Circuit of the Americas. That’s Formula 1 racing, kids. Here’s a pic of the place:

Austin 360 Panoramic. The show was sold out; this pic was taken before it started.

There were two stages: the main one (shown above) and a second one set just outside the lawn area. Jeff Ross was the Emcee, and he was in full on Roast mode. Folks who had seats close to the stage were subject to his em… attentions. Watch one of the Comedy Central Roasts he’s on and you’ll get an idea of how brutal he can be.

So, here’s who was on the bill:

  • Al Madrigal – meh. I didn’t think he was that great.
  • Kristen Schaal – loved her. She’s the only female comedian on the bill, so she’s gotta hold her own, and she does. She even did a Flashdance montage with Jemaine Clements of Flight of the Conchords assisting.
  • Demetri Martin – really funny. Reminded me so much of Mitch Hedberg in a lot of respects.
  • Hannibal Buress – hilarious. He did an epic riff on different rap songs and how the rappers incriminate themselves in the lyrics.
  • Flight of the Conchords – I loved them so much live. They played some old favorites and new ones too, and all of them were great.
  • Dave Chappelle – The man, the myth, the legend. He needs to come back full time to comedy, that’s all that is. My favorite line from him: “I’ve missed you more than you missed me”.

It’s a great show. If you have a chance, check out one of the remaining dates.
