Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways: A reason to watch HBO in the offseason

This is a great rock documentary, chronicling different cities and their influence on rock music. From Chicago to Washington DC, Nashville and Los Angeles, The Foos give each city (and more to come) an episode to shine. Interviews with a lot of influential musicians pepper each episode, with a track from the Foos’s new album Sonic Highways included in each episode.

It’s worth it just to see Taylor Hawkins go bonkers over the fact that Joe Walsh is jamming with them at Rancho del Luna. Talk about fanboy-dom.

And, if you haven’t seen Dave Grohl’s first foray into documentaries called Sound City, I recommend it.

Movie Recommendation: Sound City

For those who don’t know, Sound City is a recording studio based in Los Angeles where most of the influential rock recordings of the past 40 years were laid down. Think Fleetwood Mac, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Nirvana, Weezer, and the list goes on and on.

In recent times, Sound City with its Neve soundboard has almost been swallowed up with the advent of digital music production (the dreaded auto-tune is part of that). Dave Grohl put this movie together to celebrate its long, storied history, and what set it apart from other studios that have come and gone; that same Neve soundboard, custom built and used by hundreds of artists, producers, and engineers.

If you’re into learning about rock history (and I am in a big way), check it out. There’s a plethora of famous faces that stop by to tell their tales about Sound City. There is even a Nirvana reunion of sorts, with a special guest filling it for Kurt.

Great flick overall.

Dave Grohl joins Queens of the Stone Age on their sixth album

So there was a cryptic image today on the QOTSA Facebook feed, and it suddenly all makes sense:

So Dave on drums, eh?

Queens of the Stone Age is one of my favorite bands. I’m not sure why, but I tend to dig whatever Josh Homme collaborates on, which includes also Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl  is on drums there also), and Eagles of Death Metal. Word round the campfire recently was that the Foo Fighters were going on hiatus for awhile, and it looks like Grohl will be going on tour with QOTSA next year.

I’m pretty happy about that. I liked his last collaboration with this band, Songs for the Deaf. Favorite song: Go With The Flow. Take a gander:

NME has an article on the subject. Feel free to peruse for more info.
