Boyhood: a review (yes, you should totally watch it)

Written and Directed by: Richard Linklater

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, and Lorelei Linklater

Filmed over the course of 12 years in real time, Boyhood is a look at life for a young boy named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) between the ages of 7 and 18. His parents (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette) are divorced, but they try to make time for their kids as much as possible.

It’s as real as it gets. Mom gets remarried a few times with limited success, Dad does his music thing until he gets remarried and has a child (aka, say goodbye to the GTO and hello to the Minivan), and the kids just keep living their lives until it’s time to go to college.

What’s interesting about this movie (in my opinion) is that Linklater chose to stay with the same characters over the course of 12 actual years. As Ellar grew up, Mason grew up at the same pace. Though filming was completed in 45 days, in reality it spanned more than 4000 days as Linklater would film about 15 minutes or so every year in mini-movies to show 1 year of life for Mason. The soundtrack also depicts the period of time, as Coldplay’s “Yellow” starts things off and Arcade Fire’s “Deep Blue” ends the film.

Big ups to the state of Texas (my lifelong home) in this film. Filming locations went as far east as Houston and as far west as Big Bend National Park, and a few points in between. She’s a beauty.

Boyhood is currently nominated for a few Academy Awards, including:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (Richard Linklater)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Ethan Hawke)
  • Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette)
  • Best Original Screenplay (Richard Linklater)

Texas: defined.

I think this sums the state up nicely:

Of course, Richard Linklater know of what he speaks, as he’s a native son. The above is from his movie with Jack Black called “Bernie”. Here’s a trailer:
